THE POROSI-TEA ON OUR CURLS AND COILS
Our hair can’t talk to us to tell us what it wants. But if it could, it probably would go on and on about hair porosity and the way our hair retains and sustains moisture. When we understand porosity, we know what our curls and coils need, and we can get the style we want to achieve.

WHAT IS HAIR POROSITY?
Hair Porosity refers to how well our hair retains moisture and how moisture flows through it. It sounds wild, but each strand of hair might have different porosity. While we don’t need separate products for every strand of hair (We don’t have counter space for that), we do need certain products tailored to our hair’s overall porosity. This is to prevent things like weigh-down and breakage and to keep our curls and coils looking and feeling healthy.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HAIR POROSITY?
Hair porosity can be Low, Medium, or High. There’s no “good” or “bad” porosity. When our curls take a long time to get wet; and products aren’t absorbing as well as we like them to, this is an indicator of having Low Porosity. When our curls take in moisture and can easily hold on to it, this is Medium Porosity. If our curls soak in moisture effortlessly but dry out quickly, this is High Porosity.
CAN HAIR POROSITY CHANGE?
No matter what type of hair porosity we have, we do know that it can change. Hot combs, hairdryers, hair dyes, the heat from the sun, and yes, even hormones can alter our hair’s porosity. When we’re aware of these changes, we can figure out what our curls and coils need; and help us get the styles we want to achieve.
WHICH NOU PRODUCT CAN I USE FOR WHICH POROSITIES?

WHAT IS CURL PATTERN?
Curl pattern is a classification system broken down into categories depending on the type of hair (the number) and the diameter of the hair. (the letter). Some of us know our curl pattern better than the lyrics to our favorite songs. Some of us don't.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CURL PATTERNS?
Although the classification system starts at 1 (straight hair), for curly-haired people like us, we need to skip over 1 and 2 (wavy) and go directly to number 3.
We describe these curl patterns as follows:
3A: Loose and Large Curls 3B: Bouncy Ringlets 3C: Corkscrew Curls 4A: Springy Coils 4B: Close-knit Zig-Zags 4C: Tight Coils
CAN CURL PATTERN CHANGE?
Just like hair porosity, our curl pattern can change depending on a variety of factors. We might start our day off with one curl pattern, then an unexpected downpour later; we’re on a completely different end of the curl pattern spectrum. We can also have multiple curl patterns on our heads, either naturally or from treating our hair.
